Thinking of Teaching Abroad? Here’s What You Need to Know
Can I Bring My Family with Me?
Many schools provide support for dependents, including housing, travel expenses, and even covering tuition fees at an international school—often the same one where you’ll be teaching. However, this varies widely, so it’s essential to confirm these details before accepting a position.
Tip: Ask about family-specific benefits during the interview process to understand what’s included in the relocation package.
What Kind of Insurance Do I Need?
Health insurance is usually part of the salary package offered by international schools. However, it’s wise to consider additional coverage, such as travel insurance, to cover the journey and any gaps before your new health insurance begins.
Tip: Always verify the specifics of the health insurance provided, including what’s covered and whether it extends to dependents.
Do I Need a VISA?
After you are hired, the school will work with you to gather the necessary paperwork to apply for a work visa. While teachers are typically responsible for obtaining and authenticating documentation costs, schools usually assist with the visa process and related expenses. If this support is provided, it will usually be mentioned in your Offer Letter.
Tip: Visa processing times vary by country, so start early to avoid delays. Schools often provide detailed instructions to make the process smoother.
What is the School Like?
Each school is unique, but the schools that we work with emphasize the Finnish approach and holistic educational programs. Keep in mind that "Finnish-inspired" may differ from what you’ve experienced in Finland. Schools often adapt to local cultures and academic standards, so flexibility and a willingness to embrace new teaching methods are key.
Tip: Reach out to the principal at the school to gain insights into the culture and expectations.
What Are the Working Hours?
International schools generally have 7–8 working hours per day, which includes teaching, planning, and meetings. Specific working hours will be detailed in your contract.
Tip: Review your contract carefully to understand expectations around after-school activities, grading, or parent-teacher meetings. Many of our schools also expect teachers to participate in marketing events and efforts in some way.
How Long Are School Days?
In Finland, students enjoy some of the shortest school days in the world. While many or our partner schools aim to adopt this philosophy, longer school days are common in many countries. However, these are typically age-appropriate and focused on student well-being.
Tip: Be prepared for a different structure and longer hours while still prioritizing student-centered learning.
