Position Overview
Dar Essalam American School (DAS) is excited to invite applications for a committed and resourceful Secondary Chemistry Teacher. IB Biology teachers at DAS are responsible for planning, preparing, and delivering high-quality instruction aligned with the International Baccalaureate (IB) standards. Teachers are tasked with creating an inclusive and engaging environment that fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and inquiry.
To excel in this role, the teacher must create an inclusive classroom that welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and encourages them to explore, inquire, and engage critically with the world. Collaborating with other disciplines to integrate language and interdisciplinary approaches into teaching is a key role component.
All staff must undergo training in Child Protection and Safeguarding.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach Biology within the IB DP framework for high school students, ensuring alignment with IB standards and objectives.
- Designing and implementing formative and summative assessments to monitor and support student progress.
- Collaborating with colleagues to develop and refine Biology curricula to meet IB requirements.
- Supporting the social and emotional well-being of students, often through a tutor or advisory role.
- Engaging in ongoing training to stay current with IB methodologies and best practices.
- Foster student participation and motivation to establish a positive learning atmosphere.
- Maintain excellent classroom management and keep accurate records of student performance.
- Communicate with the Secondary School Principal
Typical Duties and Responsibilities (Including but not limited to):
Subject Instruction
- Plan and deliver lessons following the school curriculum and educational standards.
- Use a variety of teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles.
- Incorporate technology and multimedia resources into lessons.
Assessment and Evaluation
- Design and administer assessments to measure student understanding and progress.
- Provide constructive feedback on assignments and exams.
- Maintain accurate records of student grades and performance.
Classroom Management
- Establish and enforce classroom rules and expectations.
- Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Curriculum Development
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop and revise curriculum materials.
- Stay updated on educational trends and best practices.
- Integrate cross-cultural perspectives into the curriculum.
Parent Communication
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress and classroom activities.
- Attend parent-teacher conferences and other school events.
- Address parental concerns in a timely and professional manner.
Professional Development
- Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities.
- Attend workshops, conferences, and training sessions to enhance teaching skills.
- Stay informed about changes in education policies and practices.
Cultural Sensitivity
- Understand and appreciate the cultural diversity of the student body.
- Adapt teaching strategies to meet the needs of students from various cultural backgrounds.
- Foster a global perspective in the classroom.
Extracurricular Involvement
- Participate in or lead extracurricular activities, such as clubs, sports, or academic competitions.
- Support students in their personal and academic development beyond the classroom.

Other Duties
Carry out additional responsibilities as requested by the Secondary School Principal.
Minimum Qualification
- Master’s degree in Biology or a closely related field.
- Teaching certification/credential in the teaching subject.
- Two or more (2+) years of experience and proven success in a teaching role.
- Understands how to support linguistically diverse students.
- Proven experience and expertise with the American and/or Finnish model of academic programs.
- Outstanding communicator verbally and in writing.
- Unimpeachable integrity and personal qualities of warmth, transparency and approachability, empathy, and charismatic visibility.

Additional Notes
- Teachers are required to play a critical role in implementing and enforcing child protection policies and procedures to create a safe and secure environment for all students, staff, and parents, ensuring safeguarding measures are effective throughout the school community.
- Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, such as other teachers, support staff, and counselors, to ensure and maintain an effective child protection framework.
- Investigate and address any reported incidents to support continuous improvement in child safeguarding practices.
- Your leadership and commitment to child protection contribute significantly to the overall well-being and academic success of students under your care.
Occupational Health and Safety
- Comply with workplace policies and procedures for risk identification, assessment, and control.
- Participate in activities associated with the management of workplace health and safety.
- Identify and report health and safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damages at the workplace.
Special Events
- All staff are required to attend all school events, including but not limited to professional development days, sports days, special events, and parent-teacher conferences.
- All staff members are required to lead one after-school activity each week for one full semester and participate in school events that may take place after school hours or during weekends.
