The School has partnered with Lumo Education and International Schools Services (ISS) to develop an innovative curriculum that draws from the best of Finnish and American pedagogy to deliver a student-centered, enriching, and challenging program that prepares students for lifelong success.
DAS seeks a compassionate and experienced Special Needs Teacher/Learning Support Specialist to join our inclusive K.12 learning support team. This role involves working closely with students requiring additional support to foster their academic, social, and emotional development, with a particular focus on enhancing language skills. The successful candidate will collaborate with teachers, parents, and staff to create personalized learning opportunities while promoting inclusive practices across the school.
Role and Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver targeted lessons and interventions for students with special needs, both in small groups and through individualized instruction.
- Collaborate with homeroom teachers/specialty teachers to co-plan and co-teach in inclusive classrooms.
- Develop and implement Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) in collaboration with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Conduct assessments and screenings to monitor student progress and tailor instruction accordingly.
- Support the admissions evaluation process to ensure seamless integration of new students.
Typical Duties
- Actively participate in the Student Wellbeing Team to enhance the school’s inclusive practices.
- Provide coaching and strategies to staff for supporting students with diverse needs, especially in language development.
- Engage in extracurricular activities to foster a well-rounded school community.
- Promote cultural sensitivity by incorporating diverse perspectives into teaching practices.
- Maintain a safe learning environment by adhering to health and safety guidelines.
- Pursue professional development opportunities to stay updated on best practices in special education.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Education or Special Needs Education (or equivalent).
- Minimum of 4 years of teaching experience, with proven success in supporting special needs students.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Training in child protection and safeguarding.
Preferred Skills
- Expertise in supporting the development of language skills among students.
- Experience in international or culturally diverse environments.
- Familiarity with Finnish educational practices and special needs frameworks.
- Proficiency in technology-based educational solutions.
- Visionary and strategic thinking skills.
- Fluency in French and/or Arabic is an advantage.
