Scope of the Position
Dar Essalam American School (DAS) is seeking a dedicated and innovative Design Technology Teacher to join our team. As a school that integrates Finnish and American pedagogical approaches, we are looking for a professional passionate about delivering an engaging and forward-thinking curriculum. This role provides an opportunity to inspire and challenge students in a supportive and culturally diverse environment that values academic excellence and global understanding.
The Design Technology Teacher will be responsible for teaching K-12 students through dynamic and practical instruction aligned with DAS’s mission, vision, and educational standards. The teacher will cultivate critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills through hands-on projects, collaborative learning, and interdisciplinary methods. The goal is to create a positive learning environment that nurtures technical skills, design principles, and real-world applications.
As a school-wide role, this position involves creating a consistent approach to design education across all grade levels while collaborating with divisional principals, teachers, and staff to align teaching practices with the school’s vision. The teacher will foster a welcoming and inclusive environment, encouraging students from diverse backgrounds to explore, inquire, and think critically.
All staff members are required to complete Child Protection and Safeguarding training to ensure every student's well-being and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Developing and delivering high-quality design and technology lessons that meet curriculum standards and align with school goals.
- Inspiring students to explore and apply design concepts, engineering principles, and technological solutions to real-world challenges.
- Facilitating project-based learning experiences that encourage critical and creative thinking.
- Assessing and monitoring student progress, providing constructive feedback and differentiated support to meet individual learning needs.
- Ensuring a safe and productive classroom environment by following safety protocols and maintaining equipment.
- Conducting activities and lessons based on American and Finnish methodologies.
- Encouraging active student engagement in learning.
- Motivating students to create a positive and enjoyable learning environment.
- Displaying excellent classroom management skills.
- Ensuring the social and emotional safety of all students.
- Keeping accurate records of student performance.
- Communicating effectively with the Principal.
Duties and Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
Curriculum and Lesson Planning
- Design, plan, and implement lessons in design and technology that integrate interdisciplinary knowledge, focusing on areas such as product design, digital design, materials science, and engineering.
- Create instructional materials and assessments that address a variety of learning styles and abilities.
Instruction and Student Engagement
- Use a range of teaching methods and strategies to facilitate active learning and student engagement.
- Encourage students to take ownership of their learning through self-directed projects and collaborative activities.
- Support students’ exploration of digital tools, software, and design processes, from initial concept to final prototype.
Assessment and Feedback
- Conduct ongoing formative and summative assessments to evaluate student performance and inform instruction.
- Provide constructive, individualized feedback on students' projects, helping them refine their skills and deepen their understanding.
Classroom and Resource Management
- Maintain a safe, organized, and engaging classroom environment, ensuring students understand and follow safety protocols.
- Manage resources and equipment, coordinating with the school administration to ensure the availability of necessary materials for student projects.
Professional Development and School Participation
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development sessions, and school events to stay updated on educational trends and contribute to the school community.
- Collaborate with colleagues to enhance the Design Technology curriculum and support interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
Extracurricular Activities
- Organize and participate in extracurricular activities related to design technology.
- Lead or assist in planning special events and foster students’ design talents through participation in school-wide initiatives and performances.
Cultural Sensitivity
- Incorporate cultural diversity into lessons by introducing students to design from various cultures and traditions.
- Create a classroom environment that respects and celebrates the diverse backgrounds of all students.
Health and Safety
- Ensure the safety and well-being of students during design technology activities, especially when handling materials and equipment.
- Follow school protocols for health and safety and respond promptly to any incidents.
Team Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with teachers across divisions, specialist staff, and school leadership.
- Actively participate in school-wide initiatives, interdisciplinary projects, and team meetings.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in Design Technology or a related field.
- Teaching certification or credential in design technology or secondary education.
- Five or more (5+) years of experience and proven success in a teaching role.
- Understanding of how to support linguistically diverse students.
- Ability to adapt to the school’s innovative curriculum that integrates the best practices of Finnish and American approaches.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
- Personal qualities of warmth, transparency, empathy, and approachability.
- Strong collaboration skills and a commitment to building a student-centered, community-minded environment.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Master’s degree in Design Technology or a related field.
- Successful international and overseas experiences.
- Educational or professional experience in a culturally diverse environment.
- Experience in technology-based educational solutions.
- Visionary and strategically minded thinker.
- Skills in French and/or Arabic are an advantage.
Additional Notes
- Teachers play a critical role in implementing child protection measures and developing, updating, and enforcing policies to create a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and parents.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure and maintain effective child protection frameworks, investigating and addressing incidents to improve safeguarding practices.
- Leadership and commitment to child protection significantly contribute to the well-being and academic success of students under their care.
Occupational Health and Safety
- Comply with workplace policies and procedures for risk identification, risk assessment, and risk control.
- Participate in activities associated with managing workplace health and safety.
- Identify and report health and safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damage.
Special Events
- Attend all school events, including professional development days, sports days, special events, and parent-teacher conferences.
- Lead one after-school activity per week for a full semester and participate in school events held after hours or on weekends.
